Why Aren’t We Sunni?

Some people ask us when we are Sunnis why do we invite abuse by calling ourselves Lahori-Ahmadi Muslims. We are not Sunnis and in this speech we explain how our beliefs differ on many points from the Sunnis.

‘Kill Ahmadi’ Charity Under Investigation

The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into a London mosque where leaflets which called for the killing of a sect of Muslims were distributed.

The investigation has been launched following allegations in the public domain that the mosque was distributing literature from its premises promoting hatred towards the Ahmadi community. The BBC had reported in April that “piles of the flyers, which say Ahmadis should face death if they refuse to convert to mainstream Islam, were displayed in Stockwell Green mosque”.

The mosque, which is registered with the Charity Commission as Aalami Majlise Tahaffuze Khatme Nubuwwat but is also known as Stockwell Mosque, was visited by the regulator in May, and again in July 2016.

“if they’re shooting at you – you know you’re doing something right.”

Sunni turn to Lahore-Ahmadiyya beliefs again

Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad prophesied that Sunni Muslims will gradually accept the teachings and interpretations of the Ahmadiyya Movement. And by this we mean the Ahmadiyya Movement of Lahore.

Last year, when the British parliament held hearings in political Islam, all the Muslim organisations, including the Jamaat i Islami and Akhwan ul Muslameen hid their real beliefs and took refuge in our beliefs to save their skins. A few days ago the same thing happened at the British parliament’s hearings into the Muslim law of divorce.

The Sunnis turned to the Lahore-Ahmadiyya teaching again and again and again, denouncing their own beliefs and practices as being un-Islamic.The Truth of the Promised Messiah Prevails again.

Joining the Sunnis’

Some non-Ahmadi Muslims say why don’t you join us and some Ahmadis agree with them. Here we look at what the Sunni have said about The Promised Messiah and ask this: If the same things were said about a member of your family by someone will you join them and pray behind them and bow and prostrate behind them. If not then why not?

The Truth Triumph

The Promised Messiah said that as time goes on people will accept his interpretation of Islam, regardless of whether they accept him as the Messiah and Mehdi or not.

In the last few weeks we have seen that the most orthodox Sunni leaders, religious and secular, have accepted the Ahmadi interpretations in two areas.

The first is divorce. The traditional Sunni view has been that a man was entitled to pronounce the word divorce thrice and he would be divorced, even if the wife was not aware of it. The Council for Islamic ideology in Pakistan announced in the last few weeks that it has recommended to the Pakistan government to make this practice unlawful and punishable. It is worth mentioning that first family law reform implemented by the Pakistan government in 1962 was drafted by Mr Nasir Ahmad Farqui, a prominent member of this jamaat.

The second reform is related to rape-law. Last year the religious court threw out a case involving rape where the evidence was on DNA and not eye witness testimony of four people. A khutba was delivered from our UK mosque which criticised this decision and showed that DNA evidence is admissible. The Pakistan parliament has now passed a law enabling DNA evidence to be used to prove rape.

These incident prove the truth of what Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad said and quoted above.

Sunni Muslims need to look at their own beliefs

Allah changes a condition of a people when they change their own condition

Our brother Sunni-Muslims (at a national and international level) are always complaining about the poor reputation they have in the World. But, as they saying goes, it is easy to blame others for their prejudices and very hard to look at ourselves.

In this Khutba we show that our Sunni brothers need to look at their beliefs and behaviour to see if these are the cause of their poor reputation and not only others perceived prejudices against them.

Muslims in the UK armed forces

Imam Asim Hafiz is not surprised that more and more Muslims are joining the British military. He is in no doubt, either, that British Muslims can be good soldiers?. That is not because Mr Hafiz was the first Muslim chaplain for the Armed Forces when he was appointed in 2005. Nor is it because he is now an Islamic adviser to the MoD. Rather, it is because, as with an increasing number of Muslims, he believes that there is no contradiction between being of Muslim faith and choosing to defend Britain.
Hafiz was invested as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire earlier this month, during a ceremony that coincided with Islam Awareness Week. To mark this, the MoD announced that, since 2007, the number of Muslims serving in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force has risen by more than 40 per cent. It goes against public perception, but Mr Hafiz says that it is to be expected. “The increasing number of Muslims in the armed forces is a natural change, because society is becoming more tolerant and young Muslim men and women feel more able to come forward and serve,” he says.

One of the objections, from our Sunni brothers, against the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad sahib, is that he ‘supported’ the British rule in India. He did not support the British rule in India but he was grateful to them for rescuing Muslims from the situation they found themselves in when they lost political power and gave followers of every religion the opportunity to practice it openly and to preach it.

Sunni Muslims were on the one hand decrying Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad sahib and on the other joining the British military and civil service. Sunni Muslims even attacked and killed Sunni Muslims of Turkey during World War I while fighting for the British Empire.

The same thing is happening now. In those countries where Muslims are in a majority they give sermons and speeches about the necessity of violent jihad but when they come to the West, they become pussy cats. Now their followers are joining the British army.

Muslim women shocked to learn that their Islam allows wife beating

The Sunni interpretation allows for disobedient wives to be beaten, but how many Sunni women know this?

There could not possibly be any moral ambiguity on the issue of wife beating. Not in this day and age, I reassured myself. After all, Islam had not invented misogyny. Other faith traditions have had to address scriptures and religious laws that have been less than generous to women, I reasoned. Surely, a little time surfing the Internet for perspective and information would help me put the issue to rest before a reasonable bedtime. Late into the night, I continued staring at my computer screen, gripped by my worst fears, enraged by the vile reasoning and the injustice and cruelty that were masquerading as Islam.

I watched an animated cleric revel in the delivery of his sermon, fervently parsing one of the Quran’s most controversial verses: “We must know that wife beating is a punishment in Islamic law. No one should deny this because it was permitted by the creator of man,” he defiantly warned.

As hard as I prayed, I knew I had not stumbled on a lone preacher being aired on some radical network. He was not the only Muslim on the Internet preaching this position. I quickly learned that the troublesome verse has Muslims divided into three different categories of approach in interpretation. This first approach, embraced by the literalists and Wahhabis, is the one that had kept me up horrified late into the night.

The above quote from Ranya Tabari, and taken from ‘womensenews.org’, is a perfect example to show why Muslims should join the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement!

The question of wife beating has reared its ugly head again! Even Muslim women in the West, in the above case the US, are appalled when they discover that according to the traditional Sunni teaching, the Holy Quran allows husbands to beat their wives for disobedience.

This is worrying for two reasons. First, because it shows how little Muslims know of the teaching of Holy Quran and second because such teaching will drive them away. This is why reform of the understanding of the Holy Quran is needed and why the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement was created by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam, the Promised Messiah.

So what is the true meaning of this so called controversial verse? We have the answer right here.

Armed forces Imam

Sunni Muslims have always vociferously denounced the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmed, because he suggested that it was not an Islamic Jihad to fight the British army when they had control over India.

He made a clear and logical reasoning for his standpoint, but this did not stop the vicious attacks against him.

And now we here the news that a Sunni has been appointed an imam in the British armed forces. When interviewed he claimed that there is no conflict between being a Muslim and serving in the British Army. It follows therefore that there must be many Muslims in the British armed forces whose needs are to be catered for by such an appointment.

In the light of the continual Sunni attacks on the Promised Messiah, we have to wonder how our Sunni brothers can reconcile the appointment of Imam Asim Hafiz with their views.

Will Imam Asim Hafiz also be demonised and denounced?

Freedom for Women has not changed in Sunni Islam

Kerala’s prominent Muslim cleric Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar has observed that Islam has not changed its obstinate approach with regard to the freedom for Muslim women and their relation with men on the reason that the women were educated.

In an interview with latest issue of Malayalam weekly Mathrubhumi, the influential Sunni leader said the modern times require education for Muslim women. “But that did not mean the Islam has changed its decrees regarding the life of women. Muslim women should not work in a place where only a woman and a man are present. They should go for job only in a place where there are enough number of women and trustworthy men. About 90 per cent of jobs do not require man-women mingling. These rules cannot be changed. The obstinacy still continues,” said Musaliyar, the general secretary of All India Sunni Jam-Iyyathul Ulema.

On women’s mobility, Musaliyar said they should travel only in unavoidable circumstances. These journeys should be for the purposes ratified by Islam. The Islam could not accept the argument that women have to travel extensively these days. If they go out, it should be in the company of male family members or of large group of women.

‘Compulsory hijab’ school is shut down

A controversial Muslim school where staff were forced to wear the hijab has temporarily closed after concerns were raised by Ofsted inspectors.

They were called to the Al-Madinah free school in Derby to investigate a series of concerns, including claims that girls were made to sit at the back of classes.

It has not yet been confirmed whether other concerns, including the strict dress codes imposed on non-Muslim teachers and the segregation of girls and boys, were linked to the closure.

Nick Raine, a regional officer for the National Union of Teachers, who had been contacted by six teachers from the school with concerns about its practices, said shutting a school within hours of an inspection is ‘unprecedented’.

He added: ‘It must be quite significant for a school to be shut down so quickly.’ The school is already being investigated by the Education Funding Agency, from which it receives public money, over alleged irregularities over its grants.

How many times do we have to tell the British governments that Sunnis hide their real beliefs. When they meet ministers to get government funding they are nice and moderate but the truth is behind the scenes. For example, they say Islam does not force others to follow their rules but look at what this “Islamic” school was doing.
