We read from Mulfoozat Volume Two, pages 79 and 80. What is shirk (associating non-gods with Allah)? It is not just worshipping idols but also believing that unless one has this resource or that one cannot succeed.
The Quran tells us that to prostrate to anyone but Allah is shirk (raising something or someone to Godhead) and in violation of this here is an example of Sunni Islam.
Associating someone with Allah does not just mean worshiping idols made of stone. If we unquestioningly obey a person or any authority that also amounts to shirk. Islam frees us from blind obedience and wants us to do what is right.
